Xylem of apple fruit loses its functionality as the fruit develops. This might lead to a nutritional imbalance in the fruit and development of bitter pit (BP) injury associated to low levels of Ca and high levels of Mg, K, and N.. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between xylem failure in developing apple fruit and fruit mineral content in cultivars with different susceptibilities to BP. ?Fuji? and ?Catarina? apple fruit known by the lower and higher susceptibility to BP, respectively, were harvested from an orchard in Southern Brazil, at 40, 68, 96, 131, 173 and 188 days after full bloom (DAFB), and assessed for xylem functionality and mineral content (Ca, Mg, K and N contents at the distal end of the fruit). Developmental changes in xylem functionality of the fruit were investigated by using a dye infusion technique (with 1% w/w aqueous acid fuchsin) to stain the vasculature along the path of dye movement. The number of vascular bundles (primary, secondary and carpellary) with presence of dye was recorded in fruits sectioned equatorially. ?Catarina? apple has a higher susceptibility to BP than ?Fuji? as a result of an earlier onset of xylem dysfunction, leading to a reduced Ca content and increased (K+Mg+N)/Ca ratio in the fruit. The loss of xylem functionality appears (takes place/becomes visible) in ?Catarina? apple fruit earlier in the season than in ?Fuji? apple fruit. This event is associated to lower Ca content and higher (K+Mg+N)/Ca ration in ?Catarina? compared with ?Fuji? apple fruit and might be a major reason/cause for the different susceptibility to Bitter Pit between the two cultivars.
